Space consumed by column names

Hi, hopefully this is a simple question but I can’t find any docs on this: how much disk space gets consumed by table and column names on disk?

This is especially of interest to those coming from e.g. Cassandra where your column names were inserted as strings, so you could save space by keeping them small.

Even though compression often mitigates these kinds of things on disk, it’s still a valuable consideration for tables with tons of tiny/skinny rows.

Hi @dkinder! The column names don’t get stored as part of the key, so the lengths of the names just take up a constant factor of space. Check out the details of key encoding here.
